Although small amounts of gold had been found multiple times in Australia & Tasmania is wasn't until gold was "officially" discovered by Edward Hargraves, and the Australian government confirmed the findings.  It took very little time before the findings were published in the newspaper and the rush was on! 

Being the adventurous sort and not wanting to be left out, #Nipclub decided that was where we needed to be.  So shouting the famous misquote so often used with American Gold Rushes....."There's Gold in them thar hills," and headed to Australia!

Colonial authorities implemented prohibition in 1851 to stop the chaotic, riotous behavior among miners.  And the term"Sly grog" the Australian & New Zealand slang term for illegally sold or unrecorded alcohol (basically bootleg liquor) was born.

Lucky for us, the ban proved largely ineffective and was abandoned three years later.
